Work in field of literacy : For the last 12 years, Ms. Shima Modak has been involved in working towards the development, protection and welfare of the distressed and deprived section of the society especially on educational prospectives.. Since 2010, she started educational centres at a slum area called Anjali within a small space next to scrap dealers shop due to scarcity of place. It was initiated on individual basis for the children who were found to be aggressive, drug addicts, rag pickers and other distressed children working day and night to manage a small piece of bread. The work addresses the educational and developmental needs of the deprived and distressed children. Initiative is undertaken to bring education to the doorstep of every child and hence, it is located within the slum and community itself for easy accessibility and to make Education a Reality for Every Child. The idea was that if children cannot reach out to education then why not education reaches out to the children.

Social Impact : Since the initiation of the initiative undertaken by Ms. Shima Modak, it has brought about a positive change in the lives of many. Children being debarred of education due to family constraints and other crises started attending school and doing very well in studies. Children and community as a whole are empowered with knowledge and information affecting their lives. They are receiving platforms at different levels to display their skills and talents. Drop-outs and Crimes rates among children are addressed to large extend. Community acknowledging the importance of education in ones’ life. Gender disparity reduced. Equal opportunity for boys and girls. They are learning multiple things under one shed from reading –writing to film making.

The challenge of arranging funds is being met : Initially Ms. Shima Modak did not receive any support from anywhere and all the needs were fulfilled by her on personal basis from the money she earned while working in another Organization. Gradually teachers were appointed on minimum honorarium which is paid to 15 members by the small little support received from the education department at the end of the year after regular follow-up. Also approaching the concerned people for their support in times of emergency. For the teaching learning materials, she goes from door to door to collect used copies, books and stationeries as well as being donated by the well-wishers. Also approaching the hotels and restaurants requesting for food during special occasions. And, collecting old clothes from family and friends. As for space, she is networking with community as she does not have any infrastructure of her own due to carry forward the initiative.
This Award is going to impact the work in future : This Award will definitely help the initiative on large scale. It will give recognition to the work being undertaken for the cause of the children and their education. People will learn about Ms. Modak and her initiative and in turn, Ms. Modak will be able to reach out to more and more children debarred of education and lighten up their lives with education. In short, the award will play a very important role in taking forward the work and address the educational needs of the children. It can also encourage many others to join the initiative and step towards social cause and social development. Besides Government may also respond to the initiative of Ms. Modak and help her with assistances to meet the requirements.
