Work in field of literacy : I am working as a lawyer with a socio-legal perspective for the past 17 years. I have consciously chosen to work as a trainer to be able to educate people by simplifying law and to increase the access to justice of the common people. The major work area is: Government sector: I am invited as a resource person by Government Organisations like Women and Child Development Department, Social Justice Department, Health and Police. I am a regular resource persons to government officers at YASHADA. I provide assistance to government officers in interpretation of laws through these trainings so that laws can be effectively implemented. I have also been invited to share my experiences in trainings organized for judges. Lawyers: To strengthen access to justice and increase the participation of lawyers in pro bono work I was involved in developing and conducting trainings of lawyers from various districts. The idea was to sensitise them in understanding issues related to human right violations a

Social Impact : By engaging with government officers from police, judiciary, Women and child Development Department and Social Justice Department I have been able to bring in a right based perspective in looking at issues related to public interest. Before I trained the police they were hesitant to file complaints of women who were victims of domestic violence because they looked at the situations suspiciously. I was able to change this through constant dialogue and sensitisation trainings especially by sharing the social, cultural and economic challenges women face while accessing the law enforcement mechanisms. Now the police refer cases to me and they also ask me for guidance on how they can file the complaint effectively when they face any challenge. The legal aid committee refer complicated cases to my office as they are aware of the work that we are doing as we have been able to build a rapport and credibility over 17 years of work that has been done consistently. As I have a good network with a

The challenge of arranging funds is being met : Most of these initiatives have not been funded. But since they are important I have given my time in working for legal literacy. The social justice tours have been done through crowd funding. Some people provided their support in kind and some in cash. Understanding the need for human right discourse and investing in it to stop the democratic spaces from shrinking is a big challenge. People who invest want to know how income can be re-generated from the investment. In supporting access to justice for the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups the tangible income generation cannot be seen. But the fact that their right to live a dignified life is ensured is difficult to explain in figures. Hence other than crowd funding we have decided to contribute in the form of spending and dedicating time in these activities. We provide our services for free and hence accessibility to seek assistance from justice delivery system has increased.

This Award is going to impact the work in future : The award will be recognition for the work done until now. It will boost confidence and inspire people to learn to give back to the society in ones own ways. The award amount will be utilised to take this work ahead. Also the recognition may inspire people to help in building corpus that can be utilised for enhancing the work to greater levels. This award will help in connecting me to like minded people who can be resourceful in contributing.
