Work in field of literacy : In 2011, a 21 years old college going student Kunal Ghatani collected Rs. 45 thousand through hard savings throughout a year. He reached Duars which is around 80 km from Darjeeling to buy a bike . During his one day stay , he saw dozen of homeless children playing on roads. After a brief chat with those children which touched his heart, he decided to adopt them and take care of them. He decided to give up his dream bike and came back to home. He brought 11 children to his small home in Kalimpong. Being from poor family Kunal Ghatani left college without finishing graduation so that those children can get proper education. He now takes care of 12 children including a girl child who are from Sikkim, Siliguri and Duars. All children now goes to English medium schools in Kalimpong. No of Beneficiaries : 13 + with proper funding it can increase exponentially
Social Impact : Being poor himself , if Kunal can manage to do such a great thing of educating these orphans implies that people with certain financial backing must be able to do better than this. Kunals work will portray that societal benefit can be done not only through money but sheer will to do it. Literacy rate which is not so good in the region might go up if projects like Kunal’s is supported by people and appropriate funding agencies.
Fund Outlay : 4 lakhs
The challenge of arranging funds is being met : Honestly speaking funds are really difficult to come by for the Kunal to do this project. His father is an electrician. Since kunal has admitted these childrens in reputed English medium schools in Kalimpong, some of them give subsidies but most dont. He manages some money by doing odd jobs like electrician and sound man. Also few stray donations of 2 or 3 thousands helps him keep going with the project.
This Award is going to impact the work in future : This award shall be the catalyst to make his quest of giving these childrens quality education and hence a dignified life. This award shall give him recognition , so it shall be easier to gather funds for the endeavour. Kunal needs this award desperately for him to carry on I guess.
