Work in field of literacy : AGAPE is a development society committed to holistic care and development of HIV affected and infected children. Many children who come to us have not attended school or are currently not attending school because, as children of sick parents, they frequently have had to work to support their families or take care of their ailing parents or there wasnt any money to provide a decent education. Many were rejected from schools because they were HIV positive and are now finally attending school. Agape currently has 25 children in college while others have finished their degrees and are now working.
No of Beneficiaries : 300
Social Impact : There are approximately 220 children who now call Agape “home” and almost half of them are living with HIV. We have seven childrens’ homes, each for a specific gender, age group and HIV status including a home to provide the dedicate attention for abandoned HIV positive babies brought to us by local government and non-government organizations. Agape also has a college boys home where they can have a quiet place to focus on their studies (our college girls attend residential programs). This is all part of our ongoing efforts to provide stable, loving care for our children from the cradle through college. Many children who come to us have not attended school or are currently not attending school because, as children of sick parents, they frequently have had to work to support their families or take care of their ailing parents. Many at the Agape school are attending school for the first time.
Fund Outlay : 900000
The challenge of arranging funds is being met : Agape’s programs, funding and support come in from individuals, corporate and local community sponsors. The program costs per month are apx. 9 lakhs – this includes full residential care with 3 meals a day, housing, clothes, medical care, and English medium education and private college expenses, salaries ect...
This Award is going to impact the work in future : I would like to use the money for college sponsorships since many of our children are either ineligible due to an OC status though they are orphans and many because they are orphans cant obtain the necessary certificates to apply for a scholarship. Money for college is the most difficult area to raise funds for but only a college education will allow them to be self sustaining in the future.
