Work in field of literacy : Convenor of ‘Vijayaradham’, Thodannur Block Panchayath Educational Programme (1996-2001) which was selected as the pilot educational project by the Govt. of Kerala. There were seven High Schools under this programme and the top-most pass percentage of SSLC students in the academic year 1995-96 was 39. And the lowest was 12%. These pass percentages showed that more than 75% of the students who reached class X couldn’t even express there ideas in writing the answer papers. In other words they could be called as ‘learned illiterates’. ‘Vijayaradham’ ensured the minimum essantials for getting a pass certificate to the learners by way of intense training in reading and writing.‘Vijayaradham’ was officially started with a conference of people’s representatives, teachers, presidents of Parent Teacher Associations (PTA), Social Workers and Educational Officers which was inaugurated by Sri. Paloli Muhammed Kutty, then Minister for Local Self Govt. of Kerala.

Social Impact : The first year of the implementation of ‘Vijayaradham’ itself made it a noticable Secondary Educational Programme in the Kerala State. As a mark of honour the State Govt. declared it as the States’ Pilot Educational Programme. The Local Self Govt. Department of Kerala entrusted CDIT (Centre for Development of Imaging Technology) to document the activities of ‘Vijayaradham’ and it was telecatsted through out India on Dooradarsan. Parents took their children to the local night study centres and sat along with their children while a teacher/educated youth of the locality handled the classes. Even the progress reports were analysed and distributed at these centres. Focussed training was given to children who couldn’t read and write. In connection with ‘Vijayaradham’ various camps, exhibitions, quiz programmes, audio-visual programmes, seminars on various topics etc. were conducted. Expert classes by national and state level resource persons were organised for both students and teachers.

The challenge of arranging funds is being met : 5 lakhs rupees was alloted by the Thodannur Block Panchayath. Public also contributed generously.
This Award is going to impact the work in future : The award will inspire the Education Department and teachers to think differently, to pioneer innovative programmes and to undertake challenges in the field of education, and also Hareendranath is planning if financial aid is available to establish a civil service coaching center in the dist. , in fond memory of his father late Sri. M.C. Appunni nambiar former vice chairman Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy, and also to continue the above programe with latest state of art techonology using modern visual equipements in the drowntroden tribal area schools.
