Work in field of literacy : Interactive reading & storytelling sessions in Govt primary school was how Manmohan started India Literacy Project Hyderabad in 2006. Having ignited the interest how to provide greater access to books for these children? A library in each school was not feasible for various reasons. Passionate about books Manmohan dream of the idea of a mobile library wherein he could take hundreds of books to the children and nurture the love of reading that he had inculcated in these underprivileged yet truly bright children. After much struggles a pilot mobile library was started in April 2015 in a humble autorickshaw that visited two schools each day. Few months later a used Maruti Omni was purchased, a trained librarian hired and a proper mobile library started in June 2015 visiting 6 govt schools each week in the Serlingampally Mandal. Dec 2016 the second mobile library was started. These two mobile libraries cover 12 schools and help children improve reading skills and broaden their knowledge.
No of Beneficiaries : 11454
Social Impact : In 1st year the mobile library made 187 school visits, 400 children read over 8000 books; children who earlier had minimal or no access to books other than text books. The excitement & enthusiasm of the kids in handling these storybooks with colorful pictures was joyous but even more was the improvement in their reading levels. By end of the year, over 60% of the children improved their reading level. In fact xxx children stepped up their reading capability by two levels. Reading levels were tracked using standard methodology developed by Hippocampus Reading Foundation(HRF). Today the mobile library has a repository of over 10,000 books categorized by HRF classification levels. ILP’s vision is to ensure every Govt school has access to a library to inspire children to read as many books as they can and broaden their horizons. Education departments and other NGOs can replicate the model. Over the past few years, mobile library Pustakam & Summer Camps have benefitted 11454 children.

This Award is going to impact the work in future : This prestigious award will bring lot of visibility and recognition to the work being done by Manmohan and his team. But more importantly it will go a long way in raising awareness of this issue and the enormous challenge that India still faces in terms of illiteracy and education. Nearly 3,00,000 villages still have literacy levels below 75%. Such an award will bring positive spotlight on this issue and inspire others to join hands with us, and help us make faster progress in realizing our vision of a 100% literate India. As a secondary benefit the cash component of the award can meet the operational expenses of a mobile library for 6 months, or support a 10-day summer camp for govt. school children. Finally the recognition will also serve as a great motivation for the volunteers and staff that helped make the project successful. And will encourage them to continue rekindling govt school children’s interst in education and prevent school drop outs.
