Work in field of literacy : Prathibhatheeram is an informal education program run by selected public libraries in the coastal wards of Alappuzha to address the low education standards among the school going children in the fisher folk communities. A situation analysis pointed out relatively very poor grades of the students. About half of the high school students cannot even write Malayalam properly not to say of English or Hindi. Due to inadequate mathematical training in the lower standards, the performance of almost all students in mathematics is extremely poor. Their computer experience is hardly 10 hours per year. Factors lead to the Project a. Most of the fisher folk houses have only two rooms besides the kitchen. With the television switched on, the children found it difficult to study in the house. If the father is alcoholic study became impossible. Most houses do not have chairs and tables.

Social Impact : Through the implementation of the above program, our expectation is that when the present 7 and 8 th graders reach the 10 th standard, they would be at par with other students in the schools. The program was started in the Universal Library in Non Town Thumpoli in 2013 and has given encouraging results. Community provides even tiffin for the children who come to the study centre. End of last year, the program was extended to Coastal Welfare Centre Library, Thumpoli and Blue Star Library, Chettikad. During the current academic year we want to scale it up to all the major libraries along sea and Vembanadu backwater belt where fisher folk are concentrated. An average of 100 students will be given admission in each of these centres.
