Work in field of literacy : In 2008, Shakira started free teaching classes for girls who were not going to school and were engaged in Zardozi embroidery in and around Bareilly, with the aim to make these girls literate. She was motivated due to extremely low literacy among girls in the area and their parents’ reluctance to educate girl child. Since the girls were engaged in “Zardozi” embroidery, they were available only in night, hence Shakira started night school for these girls. She overcame resistance from their parents as they were afraid that their girls will leave “Zardozi” work and their income will be depleted. But her continuous struggle, counseling helped and she successfully complete one batch of twenty eight and every year she is teaching a batch of 28-30 girls in night classes. Her brave deed caught the fancy of various new reporters and her benevolent work was reported in press but without any economic aid.
