Work in field of literacy : Though it is a very good initiative , children in government primary schools do not have computer literacy as a part of the timetable. Especially in MGCM schools in Mumbai , well qualified teachers with B.Ed and D.Ed and it is mandatory for them to have MS-CIT. However in absence of computer literacy as a subject of timetable of 5 periods per week. they are not inclined to take on additional responsibility of implementing this program in municipal schools. Teachers despite the certification do not have hands on training on computer basics and continue to send various reports and forms manually to the education department. Now every building in charge has been provided with internet enabled computer, which is being shared by various HMs of different schools housed within the school building resulting in chaotic situation.
No of Beneficiaries : 350000
Social Impact : CACR initiated the computer literacy program (CLP) in MCGM primary schools for the first time in 2013 by arranging to send citizens and social service group volunteers to neighborhood primary schools. There are almost 3,70,000 children and it was sad to observe that computer labs were set up in some municipal schools but there were no teachers available and poor maintenance of the labs as well. CACR took up this challenge and initiated this program in 3 years we have managed to reach out more than 50 municipal schools and enable 4800 children to become literate.
Fund Outlay : 300000
The challenge of arranging funds is being met : Our NGO CACR has been spent approx Rs. 3 lacs on computer literacy program and training the teacher program on computer literacy as on date. Donations are received primarily through individual donors and a few companies but since the number of probable beneficiaries is quite large, it has been a challenge to get more volunteers , coordinators, head projects and members involved. It is true that the current task in hand itself is not easy but rather quite a task on hand is quite humongous as there are 1170+ schools housed in 460+ municipal schools buildings with 3,70,000+ children enrolled and the teachers teaching in these municipal schools are burdened with non academic work , etc.
This Award is going to impact the work in future : This means that the education department needs support through NGOs that are willing to work within system. since the infrastructure is in place and can be built up and be supported by MCGM education department and our NGO CACR would like to support the system and ensure that every child gets an opportunity to become computer literate.
