Work in field of literacy : I am working with Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha since 1985; first as a lecturer and as a principal since 2013. Over the last four years as a principal of 3 schools in remote area of Velhe tehsil, I got an opportunity to have a lasting impact on the infrastructure in a region where the schools lacked even the most basic necessities. The lack of toilets for girls was particularly causing them to drop out after eights standard while the dilapidated roof of a building could have turned into a disaster any day. I led the crucial initiative of fund raising from a private company and two Rotary Clubs in the Pune city. Overcoming local politics and vested interests I united the parents of the students and raised about a third of the funds from them. Above efforts resulted in repairing of 6 classrooms, construction of toilets, 4 classrooms, kitchen for midday meals, and compound wall. After handing over the school to a new principal, I am now continuing my work at Saswad.
No of Beneficiaries : 600 girls and 400 boys
Social Impact : The attendance of students at the three schools has risen by about 20%. Girls, in particular, now don’t have to drop out for lack of a toilet. Villagers now participate actively in the functioning of the school. They are aware about their rights as well responsibilities. This will ensure maintenance of the school infrastructure. More importantly the schools now function well through participation of all stake holders rather than leadership of the administrator alone. Many of the alumni of the school have also reconnected with the school and help in functioning of the school in their capacity.
Fund Outlay : 1400000
The challenge of arranging funds is being met : Funds are being raised from following sources • Parents of the students: Rs. 5 lac so far • CSR funds of private companies: Rs. 4 lac so far • Rotary clubs in Pune: Rs. 4 lac so far • Government funds: Rs. 1.8 lac so far • Alumni: Rs. 40,000 so far
This Award is going to impact the work in future : The award will be an inspiration and morale booster for 40 odd staff members of the school and villagers. The award will help us in raising funds and enable us to reach out to more number of schools in the region. I pledge to add an amount equal to the award to fund the following activities • Reaching out to more students from rural areas in the district to identify the challenges they are facing • Improving infrastructure in remote schools which are struggling for lack of funding from the government for the past several years • Enabling rural students to participate in extracurricular activities including sports, science exhibitions, educational tours, and competitive exams for their comprehensive development.
